Consequences for Breaking the Tribal Code
In the Empire of Nothing a broken contract results in a lawsuit, a broken law results in their governments coming after you, and as we have already learned a broken oath usually results in a reward. Results that reinforce the Empire’s primary lesson, nothing matters except what crosses them and can be legally enforced by their governments. Justice for victims of crime doesn’t factor into it, the empire and its courts only care about the side they benefit from.
The tribe operates differently. Here, consequences need to be immediate, tangible, and communal. A broken oath doesn’t risk a credit score, it risks your soul. A violation of trust doesn’t result in a judge shrugging his shoulders, it runs the potential for exile. This isn’t cruelty; it’s necessity. A tribe that cannot enforce its own boundaries and code cannot survive.
The Norse understood this intimately. The níðingr, ( Coward or dishonorable one) was not merely shamed but cast out. His name was blighted, his family shared in his disgrace, and his wyrd was irrevocably darkened. This was not punitive for punishment’s sake but also protective for the tribe’s sake. A single rotten branch can infect the entire tree.
