More alive. Before the first cut is made, before the steel bites the wood, there is a silence. A moment of stillness between the man and the tree.

I place my left hand on the bark. It is old, older than my family’s name in this land. It has felt a hundreds of winters and seen a hundreds springs. I do not ask for its forgiveness. To take something and then beg absolution for their weakness. We do not beg.

I give it my name. “I am Finn of the Blackwood.” I state my purpose. “This wood will become a new cradle for the new child of m brother. It will hold the next generation of our people.”

They clear whole mountains for paper and cardboard. They are a cancer on the land. We are a part of it. We do not own this place. We belong to it.

I make the cut. Clean. Quick. Then again. This tree chosen because it stands too close to its mother and both cannot see the sun. It is a culling, not a slaughter. A necessary act for the health of the forest and the future of the tribe.

As it falls, I say the words. “Your life becomes our life. Your strength becomes our strength.” Giving thanks and respect.

We do not take from the woods. We make a trade. One day I will fall in these woods, Blood for blood, life for life. This is the balance.

Want More?

Subscribe now

Upgrade to a paid subscription and get:

Complete fiction stories and series

Every story conclusion and ending

Chapter previews from upcoming books

Discounted merch

Full archive access (Fiction and Non Fiction)

Additional and extended Non Fiction Articles

Shop our merch store

https://modern-barbarian.com/shop/

Help us grow and share our content to your timelines and feeds.

Follow us at

TELEGRAM

TWITTER/X

INSTAGRAM

THE CLAN'S RITES // THE RITE OF THE UNBLINKING EYE

The water is numbing cold.

M. It steals the breath and focuses the mind. I kneel on the slick stones of the Blackwood River at dawn, my reflection shattered by the current. This is not a bath. It is a shock to the system. A reminder that comfort is a lie and weakness is a choice. The river does not care for my comfort. It only flows.

I submerge my face. The cold is a fire, burning away the fog of sleep and the noise of the world. For ten heartbeats, there is only the cold and the darkness. I do not fight it. I become it. I let the river’s voice fill my head, the rumble of stone on stone, the rush of meltwater from the high peaks. It is the only truth before the sun rises.

When I rise from the water, the world is sharper. The colors are more vivid. The song of the water over the stones surrounds me. This is the first lesson of the Unblinking Eye: to see clearly, you must first be willing to be blinded.

I do not move. I find a point on the far bank, a moss-covered stone at the base of a cedar, and I do not look away. A fly lands on my cheek. I do not flinch. A muscle in my thigh begins to scream. I ignore it. My mind wants to wander to the day’s tasks, to the scout report from the north ridge, to the argument from last night. I push it back. I bring it back to the stone.

This is the second lesson: the world will throw everything it can at your focus. Distraction is a weapon of domestication. It keeps the sheep docile, their minds full of nonsense so they never see the slaughterhouse. The warrior masters his own mind. He holds his focus like he holds his shield.

I will stand here until the sun touches the top of that cedar. It is not a punishment. It is a sharpening. A honing of the soul. When I am done, I will be able to walk through the chaos and hear only what I need to hear. I will be able to look a man in the eye and know if he is lying.

The Unblinking Eye sees all because it has mastered the art of seeing nothing else. It is not a trick of perception, but a discipline of the soul. To see what matters, you must first learn to render everything else meaningless.

#thecrossing

Want the rest of the story?

Want More?

Upgrade to a paid subscription and get:

Complete fiction stories and series

Every story conclusion and ending

Chapter previews from upcoming books

Discounted merch

Full archive access (Fiction and Non Fiction)

Additional and extended Non Fiction Articles

Shop our merch store

https://modern-barbarian.com/shop/

Help us grow and share our content to your timelines and feeds.

Follow us at

TELEGRAM

TWITTER/X

INSTAGRAM
